I couldn’t help laughing when this silkie pullet with her snowy white beard self styled her ‘do with a stray feather. Is she one of the seven dwarves? Maybe one of the three musketeers?? Or is she Yankee Doodle Dandy???
Welcome to my blog. This is a place where I can share the little day to day stories of a small farm on the outskirts of Sydney, NSW. Our family has always enjoyed recounting tales of all the entertaining farm events and interactions we observe as we work among the animals and plants each day. I hope you’ll also enjoy them as I share them with you through this blog.
We’ve done it! Gretel’s hen, Lily, is a mum!!! It started as a beautiful idea of the Middletons – Mandy, Neil, Prue and Felix – to honour the memory of their cherished daughter and sister, Gretel, who passed away in 2015 aged just nine. Might it be possible for Gretel’s adored silkie hen, Lily, to … Continue reading
Be watching Dr Harry’s segment on Better Homes and Gardens at 7:00pm on Channel 7, March 18th 2016, to see a lovely story on a new chook house designed by primary student Rose and built by the BH&G team for Arcadia Primary School. For Mandy, Neil, Prue and Felix, and for everyone else who’s been touched by Gretel’s story, I am enormously excited to report that Hero the rooster has lived up to his name and fertilised eight of Lily’s first nine eggs!!! They are progressing beautifully and are due to hatch in one week’s time. I think I’ll … Continue reading

Gretel named her dearly loved golden silkie hen Lily and it was one of Gretel’s … Continue reading
We had fun lining up all our different colours of silkies today – it took 18 birds to represent the full range! There was barely enough room to fit every colour on this perch but the girls were very well behaved posing for the cameras. … Continue reading
Excitement is building as one of the biggest events on the Feather Flower Brush calendar for 2015 is fast approaching. The wonderful Cottage Garden Club is coming to Abergeldie for a ‘ramble’ on Saturday 19th September. It’s a members only event with possibly as many as 150 Club members visiting the farm and daphne nursery … Continue reading
Here’s my dog Phoebe’s recipe for poached eggs… First, go poaching and steal an egg when no-one is looking. The bigger the egg, the better. If you can get away with a goose egg – awesome! If caught in the act, meekly hand over the egg, dropping it very carefully and gently into the waiting … Continue reading
Here’s how to gauge winter temperatures just by looking at our dogs, Phoebe and Eva. Many thanks to DoggieJama for the fantastically cosy nighties Phoebe and Eva are wearing. They can’t wait to be helped into them each night. Yes, that’s … Continue reading
